YMCA Thames Gateway Group has launched a public appeal to raise £408k by September to unlock the start of a major £25.6 million redevelopment of its Romford site – transforming accommodation and support for young people facing homelessness.
The charity, which already supports more than 150 young people every day in its Romford hostel, says its current building – dating back to the 1960s – is ageing and no longer aligned with the standards they are working towards for young people’s accommodation and support.
With planning permission secured, funding in place and contractors ready, the organisation is now at a critical final stage. The £408k will fund essential pre-construction work, enabling building to begin and releasing the full investment.
The redevelopment will deliver 184 new supported homes alongside refurbished community and wellbeing spaces, allowing YMCA Thames Gateway Group to support hundreds more young people each year.

“We see every day the difference a safe place to live can make. Young people come to us at some of the most difficult points in their lives, and with the right support, they can rebuild their confidence and move forward positively.
We are ready to begin this transformation in Romford, but we need the community’s support to take this final step. This is a real opportunity to create something that will change lives for generations to come.”
Demand for supported housing continues to rise across the area, with the charity already operating at full capacity. Without redevelopment, opportunities to expand support and improve living conditions will remain limited.
The appeal invites individuals, businesses and community partners to contribute, with every donation helping to unlock the start of construction and bring the project to life.
