Prior to her diagnosis, Zainab lived an active and fulfilling life. But cancer – and the difficult side effects of treatment – left her feeling physically depleted and emotionally overwhelmed. Unsure how to move forward, she found herself at her lowest point.
At 57, Zainab discovered our programme at a local cancer wellbeing event. Eager for support and determined to feel like herself again, she added her name to the waiting list and soon began the 10‑week rehabilitation programme.
She was paired with Pat, one of our qualified and experienced cancer rehabilitation instructors. Their first meeting focused on understanding Zainab’s needs, her goals and the challenges she faced. From there, Pat created a personalised, structured plan designed to rebuild her strength and energy. The programme also incorporated nutritional guidance – an essential component in long‑term recovery and reducing the risk of recurrence.
Almost immediately, Zainab began to notice positive changes. Arriving with little strength and shattered confidence, she soon realised the programme offered far more than she expected.
Reflecting on her journey, Zainab shared:
“I found out about the programme through a local cancer wellbeing event. It was a difficult time in my life after diagnosis and treatment, and not knowing how to move forward with my physical health in terms of exercise, the programme came just at the right time for me.
“Pat was assigned as my rehab instructor and has been truly amazing. He has tailored each session to my capabilities and helped me take gentle steps towards exercise and physical activity.
“I looked forward to each and every session and have gained huge benefits from them.
“Although my mental health is an ongoing battle, this has and will continue to help with my mental health as well as physical health.
“A big thank you to Pat and the YMCA! I would not have been able to manage all this on my own.”
Since completing the programme, Zainab has fully embraced her new routine. Now a member of the gym, she attends regularly and enjoys classes such as TRX. She has even signed up for personal training sessions to help guide her as she continues to grow stronger.
Zainab’s progress has been remarkable. The programme not only helped her regain physical strength but also played a vital role in rebuilding her confidence and supporting her mental wellbeing.
YMCA’s cancer rehab programme runs for 10 weeks and is free to anyone over the age of 16, living in the area and recovering from cancer.
